You’ve seen emerging technology change the way businesses train their workforce, but have you seen it used to help athletes of all levels prepare for gameday? Our clients found themselves facing a huge challenge when it came to training: how to properly prepare for competition when restricted to a limited amount of physical practice time. We decided that it was time to change the way we see, and they play, the game.

In 2011, the National Football League (NFL) and the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) settled on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement that included key features to reduce the number of off-season practices, prohibit training camp “two-a days,” and limit contact practices in both the preseason and regular season. For a sport as physical as football, coaches and players quickly saw that the limited training time would negatively impact performance during competition. In response, teams across the league had to find creative ways to train—without physically practicing—and U.Group saw an opportunity to provide an innovative solution.
U.Group and its ByteCubed Labs division fielded a first-of-its-kind mixed reality training platform combining game-day and playbook data to simulate a realistic competition environment, giving teams the ability to run plays on the field against virtual opponents. The platform incorporates Microsoft Hololens augmented reality headsets and video wall technologies so players can study opponent activities in a realistic field environment and experience actual game-day plays. By factoring NFL Next Gen Stats and other unique data sources, the platform is able to analyze and model infinite plays and game-day scenarios, giving the players the critical training they need while protecting them from injury.
The first team to adopt the platform has made Pre-Game Prep a critical part of their training program—keeping them a cut above the competition.
